The Ivy School
The Ivy School is a public charter school that offers a Montessori education with Spanish language instruction. Our mission is to inspire children of diverse backgrounds to be lifelong, independent learners who value responsibility and embody peace. The Ivy School’s values are to be kind, safe, and responsible. The Ivy School is a special place where students have a voice in their learning, are forward thinkers, and are independent learners. We need your support for The Ivy School to continue to thrive.
In June of 2015, the ODE renewed The Ivy School charter for five years, 2015-2020, which attests to the excellence of our educational program. Due to the generous donors to Ivy’s Capital Campaign, we now own the Prescott building. Real estate prices are rising, but in order to refinance the debt and potentially buy a larger facility we need to have more diversified income, i.e. fundraising and grants. By establishing The Ivy School Annual Fund we are beginning to strengthen our fundraising efforts. Our goal is 100% participation in donations from our students’ families which will demonstrate our commitment to our lender.
What is The Ivy School Annual Fund?
The Ivy School Annual Fund is a way for our families and supporters to contribute to the vitality of our school. Your gift to The Ivy School Annual Fund ensures that we continue to:
- attract and retain highly qualified Montessori trained teachers
- staff each classroom with an assistant, maintaining smaller teacher student ratios
- maintain inspiring classroom environments with Montessori materials
- offer high quality instruction in Spanish, art, music, and physical education
- continue our outdoor classroom and garden curriculum in the Upper Elementary
How do I donate to The Ivy School Annual Fund?
Please complete this form for ALL Ivy School Annual Fund donations and return it to firstname.lastname@example.org. Our preferred method is through a check if it is a lump sum, and through ACH debits from a bank account if it is a monthly gift. We can also accept donations via Authorize.Net online on The Ivy School website’s ‘Support The Ivy School’ page or with a credit card, but we have to pay fees on these methods which is why checks or ACH debits are preferred. Keep in mind that if you enroll in monthly donations, half of those funds will not be realized until next school year; thus, please consider making a lump sum donation for 2016 and also enrolling in monthly donations.
Why does The Ivy School have to fundraise when we are a public charter school?
Ideally public education would be well-funded, and costs would be covered by the state. The reality is that schools must fundraise in order to provide anything beyond the basics, and this is particularly true for charter schools. According to research by ECONorthwest, Oregon charter schools receive approximately 60% of what district schools receive; plus, they have additional expenses for facilities and administration. Given that The Ivy School did not engage in significant fundraising efforts last year (with the exception of the PTA), we must raise these funds now to be used in the current school year. The Ivy School’s current operating budget for the 2016-2017 school year relies on fundraising income of $100,000. Although we hope to engage in grant writing and potentially hold an auction or other fundraising event, those efforts will take time to cultivate, and may not be available until next fiscal year.
What is the fundraising goal for The Ivy School Annual Fund?
The fundraising goal for The Ivy School Annual Fund is $100,000, which is the income expected in our current operating budget (2016-2017). We will also fundraise for the Annual Fund through SCRIP, restaurant takeovers, and other opportunities that present themselves throughout the year. If each family donated $600/year ($50/month) per student, we would raise $150,000. We understand that not all families can give at this level, but we ask that you reflect on what your student’s Montessori education means to you, and give as generously as you can.
What About The Fundraising Efforts of the PTA?
The Ivy PTA (Parent & Teacher) Association is a 501C Non-Profit Organization whose mission is to serve as a bridge between parents, teachers, and administrators at The Ivy School and to provide financial and volunteer support for the school community. As members of the national PTA, The Ivy PTA is restricted in how we support the school. The PTA may support: community events, field trips, student enrichment, school beautification, classroom materials and volunteer events. The PTA may not support salaries, financial investments on behalf of the school, or facility rent, mortgage, utilities, or maintenance.
The Ivy School PTA raises approximately $20,000 each year which is in a separate bank account managed by the PTA. PTA members vote on how to allocate those funds. Examples of the PTA’s fundraising events include: Chinook Books, Monster Bowl, Read and Write-a-thon, and a Spring raffle. The PTA also organizes community-building events, such as the whole family campout. PTA meetings are open to anyone who would like to learn more about their activities.
What if my employer has a matching gift program?
Employer matching gift programs are a wonderful way to increase your donation. Each company’s policy varies a bit, but you can usually find out about your employer’s policy through your Human Resources Department. Please contact Liz Caravaca (email@example.com) if you need help with securing the matching gift, or if you submit a request to your employer so she can ensure that the funds are received.
What if I am already giving a monthly donation to The Ivy School?
Thank you for your continued support! If you are already donating monthly to The Ivy School, your donations will continue, unless you turn in a new Donation Form to request a change in your monthly donations. Your monthly donations will be included as part of the Annual Fund, rather than the Capital Campaign. In addition, please consider increasing your gift amount annually.
How is the Annual Fund different from the Capital Campaign?
The Ivy School Annual Fund will support our operating expenses, providing a continual source of support that the school can rely on and budget for. A Capital Campaign funds major capital projects, such as buying a building, construction, renovations, or major equipment. Due to generous donors to The Ivy School Capital Campaign initiated in 2012, we now own the Prescott building. Will families be asked to contribute every year?
Yes, we plan to promote The Ivy School Annual Fund every year! If you elect to contribute monthly through ACH debits or monthly via Authorize.Net using the button below then your gift will simply continue until you cancel the authorization in writing to The Ivy School for ACH debits or through Authorize.Net, as appropriate.
